Breaking the boundaries of traditional jazz, Groove Apostles create a modern jazz-funk fusion sound, mixed with an energetic performance. Formed in Lethbridge, Alberta, the four piece have been playing in various bands together since 2011, after meeting in the University of Lethbridge Big Band. "We were all playing together in the big band, and decided to form a small group. We've had a few members come and go since then, but it's never moved from those roots; solid, groovy foundation with a few instrumental leads" says Daniel Yaretz, Keyboards. Since then they have played rock, pop, jazz and funk gigs as a "band for hire" but were always striving for their own sound. "We love the layered style of Snarky Puppy, but also the crunchy technicality of Kneebody, and the groovy nature of BADBADNOTGOOD and Vulfpeck" explains Mat Hellawell, drums.
"The music id unhurried, vaporous, and expels sufficient heat." - BC Musician Magazine 2017
This unique style has afford them to play Southern Alberta Festivals such as, Love and Records, the Courts Centre and Tour Alberta, and they've shared the stage with the likes of Five Alarm Funk, Royal Canoe, and Skratch Bastid. Vaughan Henning, Saxophone, explains that for Groove Apostles, "Getting up on a festival stage is always an opportunity; big sound, big audience, and we do our best to put on a hell of a show."
"Their stage presence is stellar, a sexy sax, killer keys, and everything else you could ask for." - HealthyPhat.com 2017
